Blue Ridge Bone & Joint is uniquely qualified to care for patients in the area of Orthopedic Sports Medicine and Primary Care Sports Medicine. Our three fellowship trained physicians — Bradd Burkhart, MD, Jay Jansen, MD, and Michael Shea, MD — specialize in the care of all athletes from elementary school to college athletes, weekend warriors toseniors. These doctors are currently the team physicians for several local universities and colleges, including UNCA, Mars Hill, Montreat College and Warren Wilson College. Multiplelocal high schools and youth and adult sports organizations are also covered year-round. Currently and throughout their training, Drs. Burkhart, Jansen, and Shea have worked with amateur and professional athletes at the highest level.
Sports Medicine comprises all injuries that inhibit “full motion living”. Our emphasis is compassionate care that will optimize function and allow our patients to return to their activities, whether that entails throwing a football or lifting their grandchild. Our patients benefit from our extensive knowledge of both operative and nonoperative treatments.
Our Orthopedic Sports medicine, fellowship trained physicians, Bradd Burkhart, MD and Jay Jansen, MD, specialize in operative and non-operative patient care. Focus is also givento performance enhancement and injury prevention. With extensive training in advanced arthroscopic and open surgical techniques, our patients receive cutting-edge care for all of their sports medicine injuries, whether simple or complex.
Michael Shea, MD specializes in the Primary Care Sports Medicine and Family Medicine. He focuses on medical issues such as exercise induced asthma, concussion, infections in athletes and overuse injuries. He also provides non-operative orthopedic care with the goal of quickly and safely returning patients to their sport or activity. The physicians have dedicated themselves to the care of the injured athlete, and are available daily for consultation from athletic trainers, coaches, and physicians. With the opening of our physician staffed Orthopedic Sports Medicine same day clinics in Asheville and Henderson, BRBJ can provide more immediate care for those patients with acute injuries.
