Dr. Boykin Publishes Article on the Use of Biologics, Regenerative Treatments in Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Robert Boykin served as a co-author on a peer reviewed publication examining the use of regenerative treatments to enhance outcomes in orthopedic surgery. The team consisted of an international group of experts on the use of biologics and reviewed the current literature on platelet rich plasma (PRP) and different types of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in orthopaedics. This included the use of regenerative therapy in the treatment of common conditions such as rotator cuff tears, ligament injuries, meniscal tears, and chondral (cartilage) injuries. Doctors Burnworth and Shea presented at a concussion conference on 2/28-3/1, at the Mountain Area Health and Education Center (MAHEC). Both physicians were on faculty for the conference “Teamwork: Management of Concussion in the Youth/Recreational Athlete and Pre-conference Community Awareness Event”. Dr. Burnworthwas on the Friday panel speaking to parents and coaches about managing concussions in youth athletics. Dr. Shea presented a lecture to area health care providers on current guidelines in the management of concussions. Both physicians manage sports concussion in the BRBJ Same Day Clinic.

I want to give parents a practical guide to concussion management. I would say for medical providers there are solid guidelines to follow for return to play for sports, but for other areas of their life there is not. I will review some of the main recommendations. No athlete should return to play on the same day to sports after a suspected concussion. Orthopedics Today and Orthopedics Today Europe (pg 41-43) both published articles highlighting ongoing research that Dr. Boykin is conducting  with the Steadman Clinic in Vail, CO and the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation in Barcelona, Spain.  The research study focuses on describing hip injuries in elite youth tennis players and examining the risk factors for injury with the eventual goal of developing tennis specific programs for prevention.

Meningitis Outbreak: BRBJ Patients Have Not Been Exposed

We have received a number of calls from patients concerned about the fungal meningitis outbreak linked to tainted steroid injections. We have investigated the matter, and our conclusion is that Blue Ridge Bone & Joint patients have not been exposed to the tainted injections identified by the CDC. Both Pardee and Mission hospitals have also confirmed that no tainted injections were used at their facilities.

2/7/12 -- Dr. Jorge Acevedo (West Palm Beach, FL) and Dr. Peter Mangone (Asheville, NC) presented their results for their first 24 patients with arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament reconstruction at the 2012 AAOS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA.  The study presented results for patients who underwent the ArthroBrostrom procedure between 2007 and 2010.  The average follow-up for the patients was 16.5 months and all patients showed improved with their instability symptoms, their instability exam, and they were improved in terms of ankle function. ...

Dr. Goebel received training and certification for a minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion technique on January 22, 2011.  He is one of the first spinal surgeons to be trained in Western North Carolina by SI-Bone, Inc.  The proceedure is designed to treat pain originating from dysfuctional sacroiliac joints.

Dr. Peter Mangone pioneering arthroscopic lateral ankle ligament reconstruction

I will be giving a talk on Dupuytren's Disease on Tuesday, April 19th at 12:30 pm in the Pardee Health Education Center at the Blue Ridge Mall in Hendersonville. Osteoarthritis of the Hand and Wrist
